  1. Correct exposure is critical, especially for colour slides. In
  2. the case of the couple on the beach, eating icecream, the camera
  3. was allowed to work on auto. As the picture was into the sun and
  4. the sea was reflecting light, the result, I knew, would be a
  5. silhouette. That was the correct decision I believe.

  7. As an aside, the lens was a 300 mm. Mirror lens. Most of these
  8. have a fixed aperture - f5.6 in this case. You can usually
  9. identify if a mirror lens was used as highlights become 'do-nut'
  10. shaped.

  12. The other shot would have resulted in the camera trying to expose
  13. for the dark walls on auto. Not what I required.

  15. I knew the light shining on the scene behind the girl was the
  16. same as that behind me - a cloudy day - so I turned round and
  17. used the camera meter behind me. Then, using manual over ride,
  18. set this exposure on the camera system and took the picture.

  20. It is important to learn, and understand, how a camera metering
  21. system will deal with each type of situation. Spot metering can
  22. be a great help, but only if you know exactly what to meter from.
